Never received any progress reports and we have been in the swim classes for months
We just started the Thursday night class and it is WAY too chaotic with the parent tot class in the pool too. The instructor had to yell the whole time for the students to hear him. My child only got to practice 3 different things in the 45 minute class. Not our best experience
This program has no set standards that are communicated to parents. There are no follow ups at the end of each lesson to know where your child should move into instructors do not have the skills to be teaching the class and do not demonstrate any of the skills they expect the students to perform this program. Definitely needs work and improvement in order for it to actually teach kids the safety skill of swimming.
It is difficult for children to hear their instructor when the swim team coach is yelling in the pool room.
As a former lifeguard and swim instructor I think the instructors didn’t receive quality training and the program is too messy for consistent quality outcomes unfortunately.
The pool was intimate and not overwhelmingly loud like other pools we have used for swim lessons. My child had way for fun than other swim lessons which helps them feel safe in the water. It's also affordable, which is the main reason we chose the Y. At first we avoided it because we thought it would be too crowded, but it surprised us and exceeded our other experiences. We are so grateful for such a positive experience & option we can afford for water safety.
We previously tried lessons 3 years ago through to City of Lacey and have being doing lessons at the YMCA since February of 2026 and have been so happy. It's been such a positive experience at the Y - thank you!
The level 4 instructor is difficult for my child to adapt to. All of the other instructors give individual encouragement, but the level 4 instructor holds back, making my child want to remain in level 3.
It's frustrating being a member and consistently being unable to obtain a space in class. It would also be helpful when possible to have students stay with consistent instructors to support student progress, foster positive relationships, and help students have foundation of trust especially in the water to challenge themselves and try new things.
Work with instructors on engagement. Some aren’t as engaged as others, some end class early or only give the kids 1 jump at the end. Open more classes.
Some swim instructor are more experienced than others and it does reflect when the kids are in the swim class. The younger instructor seems to not want to be there or don’t have too much patience with the kids.
Mermaid was just so amazing. Our grandson was hesitant to put his head underwater. By the time Mermaid was through giving him confidence, He was not only going underwater for 15 seconds at a time, he was retrieving items off of the bottom of the pool.
Loved 2 of the 3 teachers great atmosphere overall
I just love it there
The metrics for each swim level are clear, the instructors are hands on with teaching kids the right techniques (especially John) and my children's swimming skills have noticeably progressed and they have become such strong swimmers. I also appreciate the conversations the instructors have with the kids about water safety.
We like the price and the options for time. The teachers are also very patient with the young kids.
Instructor was great with my child and really helped them feel more confident in the pool.
Jackie was very helpful
Well-trained staff, great facilities, lots of options for class times
The facilities are nice, the staff is kind, our son loves swim lessons (and he is hard to please)
Helpful teachers who listen well and adapt to each kids needs.
Staffing and scheduling inconsistencies.
we are in the parent/tot swim class with our 7 month old. it's a great, structured way to introduce her to being comfortable in the water. it is hard to hear the instructor which makes it hard to transition between activities and knowing when we're in an activity versus free swim time.
I twa
Sign up process and monthly turnaround is tedious
Great program; my kids made lots of progress!
The instructor was very friendly and knowledgeable. Made me feel comfortable and confident having my child in the water.
Instructor was awesome. It was such a fun activity to do with my baby!
We loved his teacher this time! She was great at keeping the kids engaged and helping my son feel safe to try new things.
Have had a different instructor every class. No continuity.
Sense of community . Love the family atmosphere !
I’ve held back from communicating my experience in fear that a swim teacher would treat my child poorly due to my response but, they have already treated them
My kids did not have a consistent teacher and I felt the teachers were more more into their routine of teaching than seeing each individual student.
Dan is such a wonderful instructor that loves his craft. He explains things in a way that helps he relax being a 46 year old. I learned to float on my first lesson due to his calmness. I would definitely recommend lessons at the Briggs Y
The class does not teach anything related to getting child used to water. No tips have been given to help child used to getting water on head or face or anything else. Class will sing 1 or 2 songs then just have playtime.
The sessions seem a little chaotic and after 3 years of swim lessons my child still doesn’t know how to swim.
Teachers we're encouraging and patient.
More rigorous than the previous program we were enrolled in. Our kid is making real progress.
I have found that swim lessons vary significantly based on the instructor. My daughter's most recent instructor is a younger man who has been wonderful! He gives specific feedback in order to help students improve their form. Many instructors seem to go through the motions without seeming to care if students make progress.
Everyone is professional and nice. Especially Jackie who’s been so supportive and helpful.
The students spend a lot of time sitting around in the pool in Level 3 and not practicing their skills. Wonder if there could be more supporting student 2 at a time with back floats, etc. I just don’t see how my student will advance to level 4 at this rate.
They are easy going, understanding, don’t judge for showing up a little late, and know how to talk to and teach the children in a fun way in the water!
Unable to get into swim lessons like we need.
Great people and facility
I have found that the quality of the lessons vary significantly based on the instructor. Many of the instructors do not provide any corrective feedback that allows children to make progress improving their skills. Additionally, I don't feel that the class sizes at my daughter's current level (level 3) are small enough to allow for enough active instruction and practice.
Instructors are kind and patient. They help my kids build real skills. Despite the time limit and class size, they still get plenty of one-on-one instruction.
We’ve enjoyed the swimming lessons at the Y! I like that the classes for younger swimmers aren’t huge so that they can get individualized attention.
Staff do not help with enrolling for swim lessons, we have to look up every month ourselves if classes are available or not, have to wait for months to get into a class
Hands down will recommend to others.
Parent tot swim lessons are fun but I see it as more of recreational swimming than lessons. Singing songs is fun, but water safety and learning how to swim would be preferred.
We have been attending Parent tot for about a year. In recent months, more classes have been added at the same time as our class. It is very loud and crowded. It is difficult to hear instructions, space to swim is very limited, and it is overwhelming for both the parents and the toddlers. Unfortunately, I am strongly considering no longer attending Parent tot for this reason.
